As the rate of change ever increases in our world, it is good to see and recognize what is happening around us so we may make the best choices for ourselves and our loved ones. This is complicated by those who would control others for their own gain. The number of such ones is decreasing but some are still hard at work.
Stories are composed to direct our thinking, sometimes generating unnecessary urgency, in order to influence our decisions. It has been made legal in the U.S.A. to publish stories that contain false information as facts. This is commonly called propaganda.
At the same time ones attempting to post contrary actual research results are denied. We have seen this in health areas where recognized professionals publishing their findings are censured. [So others may sell a product?]
It is good to check the sources of all stories, especially if they are disturbing such as ones predicting we are headed for sure disaster.
One such narrative is the certainty of global overpopulation, that is, there will be more people than can be fed, hydrated, sheltered, etc.. A main challenge to this idea is that the birth rate since 1962 has dropped below a replacement rate of 2.1 children per woman. While the number of births still increases, so is the number of deaths.
Why are there people going hungry?
We can easily produce enough food. There are, however, challenges in growing, processing, transportation, distribution and regulation. We can institute changes to handle most or all of these. During the recent health crisis, with the closing of many businesses, farming has been moving indoors into large empty structures, such as malls and warehouses, to farm vertically. This creates a different growing environment with better control of temperature, humidity, sun/light exposure, etc. Composting can replace manmade fertilizers. Water and nutrients can be piped to plants. Harvesting can be made simpler and free of weather concerns. Processing, e.g., freezing, canning, and/or packaging can be done on site or nearby. The growing season is expanded. Losses can be greatly reduced. Related businesses can be started in the area.
Another questionable story is that an increase in carbon dioxide [CO2] will destroy the planet. This ignores the physical record of how climate has changed in the last 400,000 years on Terra (tree rings, ice cores, etc.) Terra has cycles of increasing and decreasing temperatures, amounts of carbon dioxide and cyclical ice ages.
Demonizing carbon is not good for us or the planet. 184 parts per million has been determined to be the minimum level of CO2 required to support life. We are yet carbon based. Our food is produced by plants and trees using to produce their structure, flowers, fruits and the Oxygen [O2]. which sustains us all. The selling of carbon credits does nothing to change the use of fossil fuels. It is a money making endeavor to benefit a few.
