A Gathering in the Spirit of the Elders in Algonquin Tradition called by the Pauwau
The Person:
A Pauwau is a person with primary responsibility for the health of the villagers and the village on all levels. To maintain the mental, emotional, physical and spiritual health of the entire village, up until the European influx, the Pauwau called the village together for approximately ten days several times a year. Now, the time is likely to be much shorter and less frequently. And the village may cover the globe. The days are spent in discussion, including story telling, of anything and everything that may affect the health of the village, and the evenings are spent feasting, drumming and dancing.
The Gathering in the Spirit of the Elders initiated by the Pauwau in the Algonquin Tradition is itself called a Pauwau.
Modern gatherings, also known as powwows, are modeled on this traditional village gathering, facilitated by the Pauwau, to promote individual and community healing.
